Israeli intel chief stated desire for Hamas-ruled Gaza in June 2007

Richard H. Jones, “Military intelligence director Yadlin comments on Gaza, Syria and Lebanon,” US Embassy in Tel Aviv (13 Jun. 2007), par. 6:

The Ambassador commented that if Fatah decided it has lost Gaza, there would be calls for Abbas to set up a separate regime in the West Bank. While not necessarily reflecting a consensus GOI view, [military intelligence general Amos Yadlin] commented that such a development would please Israel since it would enable the IDF to treat Gaza as a hostile country rather than having to deal with Hamas as a non-state actor.

Of course, we all know what treating Gaza as a “hostile country” has involved, don’t we?
