The release of ALEC supported “model” legislation has not only exposed the expanded reach of the conservative movement in state governments, it also displays an utter disregard for their supposed principles of “small government” in favor of large business interests. The group has:
- Lobbied for draconian “tough on crime” laws for the purpose of enriching private prison companies at the taxpayer’s expense.
- Pushed a bill to strictly regulate swap meets and flea markets as a means of protecting established retailers like Wal-Mart from competition.
- Written laws that restrict the ability of municipal governments to establish their own broadband and cable services which would compete with private telecom companies.
- Pressed for a constitutional amendment mandating that revenues collected from gas taxes and vehicle fees be spent only on highways and not on other forms of transit less beneficial to car and oil companies.
